Gifts under $10 in the US

What ten dollars buys in an American shop

The US pool is smaller than the others, and heavier on desk gifts and gaming accessories. That is fine. The best picks are still the ones that feed a habit the person already has: thumb grips for a teen who plays every night, stick wax for a hockey player who tapes their own sticks, everything bagel seasoning for the friend who already buys it.

Games carry the list. The Rubik's cube is the best single thing under $10 here. Travel Bingo earns its place on any family road trip, and the Chanukah bingo tin gives one of the eight nights a game that grandparents and small kids can play together. Jumbo index cards are a small kindness for an older card player whose eyes are tired.

Readers do well too. A bookmark costs little and gets used daily. A small card from Atomic Books in Baltimore arrives by email for a comics reader who likes choosing their own, though the books themselves still ship.

Watch the shipping

On a five-dollar item, shipping can cost as much as the gift. Several of these shops sell bigger things too, so the sensible move is to buy two or three small gifts from one shop at once. ban.do, Blue Q and OOLY each sell enough small things to make one order go further.

Order by early December for Christmas or the first night of Hanukkah. Small shops ship more slowly in the last two weeks, and the gift card is the only pick here that arrives the same day.

Two cautions. The Stasher bag we found was on sale, so the price may go back over ten dollars. The Pura Vida initial bracelet had several letters sold out when we checked, so look for the one you need before planning around it.

What we would skip

Office gag gum is a card filler, not a gift. Buy it to make someone laugh at a Secret Santa, then put something real next to it. The drink sleeves and mini plate are cheerful, but only for someone who would actually use them at a barbecue or by the door.

If you have exactly one person and ten dollars, buy the cube for a kid, the seasoning for a cook, or the bookmark for a reader. Those three cover most of the people you will be shopping for.

Questions people ask

What is a good gift under $10 for a coworker?

Something they can use at their desk or eat. A good pencil, a pack of sticky notes, a bar of chocolate from an independent maker or a small tea gift all work. Avoid scented soaps and lotions unless you know their taste, and check allergens on anything edible if they might share it with the office.

Is a gift under $10 cheap or rude?

No. Most office Secret Santas and teacher gifts sit around this level, and a small useful thing reads better than a big pointless one. The trick is to pick something specific to the person, like picks for a guitarist or a sharpener for someone who camps, rather than generic filler from a checkout rack.

What can I get a kid for under $10?

A Rubik's cube for a child of eight or more, a small clay kit, a travel bingo game for car trips, or a glider or bouncing putty for younger kids. Look at the age on each pick. Several of the small toys in our pool are fine for older children but have parts that do not suit toddlers.

Are digital gift cards under $10 worth giving?

Sometimes. One Audible credit buys a full audiobook, which makes a good instant gift. A small card to an independent bookshop can cover a used paperback. Most other small cards fall short of a single item or lose value to delivery fees, so we would rather buy a physical thing at this budget.
