A thank-you is not a birthday present. Keep it to something they eat, drink or use up, so nobody feels they owe you one back. British chocolate makers are good at this: a small selection box, three single-origin bars, a crate of salted caramel eggs. Tea is the other easy win.
Always write a note. A set of good cards in the drawer means you never have an excuse.
For a dinner host, bring something for later rather than for the meal: a spice set, tea or chocolates they can save. For a teacher at the end of term, stay under twenty pounds and avoid nuts. Hand cream, a mug or a school bag donation in their name all work.
For a neighbour who watered the garden, flower scissors suit a gardener. For the whole office, a box of Scottish tablet in the staff room covers everyone for very little.
For a real favour, like someone who helped you move, an afternoon tea voucher for two lets them pick a venue near home, and it can be emailed the same day.
Hand creams and balms come scented with orange, bergamot or herbs, and some people find any scent a headache. Chocolate selections often include nuts. If you do not know the person well, go for tea or a card. Post chocolate early in December, and pick a bar over truffles if it has far to travel.
For a teacher, the Love Cocoa box and a card. For a host, Pump Street bars or a spice set. For a neighbour who fed the cat, tea. For a whole team, tablet in the staff room. Do it within the week; a small gift that arrives quickly says more than a big one that turns up a month later.
Skip the big gift bag. A small box and a card in your hand is the right size for a thank-you. If you post it, put the card inside the parcel.
