Thank-you gift ideas in Australia

Small and used up

A thank-you gift should be easy to like and quick to finish, so nobody feels they owe you. Chocolate, tea and hand cream cover most of it. Australian makers do well here: Haigh's in Adelaide, Koko Black in Melbourne, Zokoko's native-flavoured bars, Leif and Koh Living hand creams.

Write a line in a card about what they actually did. That is the part they keep.

Match the gift to the favour

For a host, bring something they can open later. Lemon myrtle oil and bush dukkah become a starter another night. A tea towel is the cheap, useful option.

For a teacher at the end of the school year, stay under 25 dollars and skip nuts if it is headed for a classroom. Hand cream and a tea sampler are safe. For a coworker who covered your shifts, a dark chocolate bar on the desk is enough. For a bigger favour, a full chocolate box or a book voucher.

Summer and the post

The end-of-year thank-you season is high summer here, and chocolate melts in a post bag. In December and January, send tea, hand cream or a digital card, and hand over chocolate in person. A Readings gift card arrives by email in about fifteen minutes, which covers the late or the far away.

Check scents too. Glasshouse and Natio both use strong fragrance or essential oils, and some people avoid them.

What we would give

For a teacher, the Haigh's tin or a hand cream, handed over on the last day. For a host, the dukkah bundle. For a coworker, a Zokoko bar. For someone far away, the Readings card. Do it within the week, and put the card inside the parcel if you are posting it so the thanks arrives with the gift.

Handing it over

Skip the big gift bag. A small box and a card in your hand is the right size for a thank-you. A whole class chipping in for one bigger gift beats twenty boxes of chocolate.

Questions people ask

How much should you spend on a thank-you gift?

Usually less than you think. For a coworker or neighbour, $10 to $25 is plenty. For a host or teacher, $15 to $40 is common. Save larger amounts for a big favour, such as help with a move or a reference letter. A handwritten note with one specific line of thanks matters more than the price, and too expensive a gift can make the other person uncomfortable.

What is a good thank-you gift for a teacher?

Something small, consumable and nut-free, since it may end up in a classroom. Hand cream, tea, coffee, a small notebook or a box of chocolates without nuts are all safe. Many schools cap gift values, so stay modest. A note from the student, even a few words, is often what teachers keep. Group gifts from a whole class can go a bit higher.

What should you bring as a thank-you for a dinner host?

Bring something they can enjoy later rather than something they must serve that night. Good olive oil, honey, chocolate or coffee all work. Flowers create a job for the host mid-party unless they come in a vase. If you bring wine, say it is for them to keep. Follow up the next day with a short thank-you message.

Is a gift card an acceptable thank-you gift?

Yes, especially for someone far away or when you need something fast. A food delivery card is a good thank-you for someone who helped through a busy time, like new parents. Keep the amount modest and pair it with a personal message so it reads as thanks, not a payment. Check the card works where they live.
