White elephant gift ideas in the UK

What gets stolen

The best swap gifts get a reaction when opened and then turn out to be useful. A plain gift card is useful but flat. A rubber chicken is funny but nobody wants to carry it home. Aim for the overlap: a thing people laugh at, then pick up and play with, then want.

In a UK office swap, that means the Vecco camera kit, which gets built at the table, the Simpsons blanket, which is big, soft and silly, and Not Mushroom, which can be played before the mince pies run out. The Grind tin and the Emma Bridgewater mug are the safe steals that rarely stay with their first owner.

Budgets

Most groups set the limit between £10 and £30. Stay close to the number. A gift well under it gets passed over, and one well over makes the game lopsided. If your pick lands low, pair it with something small rather than bringing two separate gifts.

Food and drink gifts go fast, but check the group. If there are kids, skip anything boozy. If there are allergies, the label matters more than the flavour.

Wrapping and timing

Wrapping is part of the game. A box that hides the shape gets picked earlier, and a bag with a visible logo gets skipped or stolen for the wrong reasons. Put small items inside a bigger box. Order online gifts by early December, because the swap date does not move.

What to leave at home

Pure gag gifts nobody wants to carry home on the train, scented candles for a room full of strangers, and anything that needs a specific phone. If you run out of time, print the Audible code and put it in a box with a small treat, so it still feels like a gift when it is opened.

When in doubt, bring the thing you would steal yourself.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between white elephant and Yankee swap?

They are the same game with different names. Everyone brings a wrapped gift, draws numbers, and on their turn either opens a new gift or steals an opened one. White elephant is the general US name and gifts often lean funny. Yankee swap is the New England name and gifts usually stay practical. Dirty Santa is the Southern name for the same thing.

How many times can a gift be stolen in white elephant?

Most groups use three steals. After a gift is stolen for the third time it is locked with whoever holds it. Many also ban stealing back the gift that was just taken from you on the same turn. There is no official rulebook, so the host should announce the limit before anyone opens a gift to avoid arguments later.

What is a good white elephant gift for adults?

Something fun to unwrap that is also useful: a build-your-own film camera, a Stanley tumbler, hot sauce from Hot Ones, or a party game you can play on the spot. Avoid pure junk and anything that needs a size. Gifts that get used at the party tend to get stolen most.

How much should you spend on a white elephant gift?

Follow the limit the host sets, usually somewhere from 20 to 50 in your currency. Stay close to the number so the game feels fair. A gift far under the limit gets passed over and one far over makes everyone else look cheap. If you land under, pair two related items instead of padding with filler.
