Retirement gift ideas in Canada

The weak retirement gift is a reminder of work. The strong one points at what they plan to do with the time. Ask, or listen. More travel means the Parks Canada Discovery Pass, which covers a full car of grandkids. More reading means the Kobo Clara BW, which borrows library books on the device. More time at the cottage means the Revolution Wool throw, the KUMA fire bowl or the crokinole board from Lunenburg.

For a retiree with stories to tell, Storyworth sends a question a week for a year and binds the answers into a book.

From the office or from family

An office collection should buy one good thing. The Ooni oven, the Garmin inReach, the Aura frame or the crokinole board all work as a pooled gift. Family can go smaller and more personal: a Mixbook of the grandkids, the reading journal, or a Detour coffee subscription to start the slow-morning habit.

Budgets and catches

Under $60: the reading journal, the pruner, the photo book and the food jar. From $60 to $200: the park pass, the Kobo, the coffee club, the AeroPress, the throw, the puzzle board and the day pack. Above $200: the Ooni, the inReach, the Aura frame and the crokinole board.

Watch the ongoing costs. The inReach needs a paid satellite plan. The Detour club keeps billing until someone cancels it. The Aura frame depends on Aura's cloud service. The physical Parks Canada pass can take a couple of weeks to arrive, so order it early. Check fire bans before the fire bowl comes out.

Timing and presentation

Retirement dates are known months ahead, so order early and avoid paying for rush shipping. For a party, print the pass, the Storyworth confirmation or the coffee club details and put them in a card. A card is easier to hand over across a crowded room than a crokinole board, and the board can be delivered to the house afterwards. Skip anything with the company logo on it.

Questions people ask

What is a good gift for someone who is retiring?

Something tied to what they plan to do next. Ask what they have been putting off: travel, gardening, reading, time with grandchildren. Then buy the tool for it, such as a park pass, good secateurs or an eReader. Storyworth is a strong family gift because a new retiree has time to write, and the result is a book the whole family keeps.

How much should coworkers spend on a retirement gift?

There is no rule, but pooling works better than many small gifts. A group can afford one item of real quality, such as a hand-wound watch, a pizza oven or wheeled luggage. For a single coworker, under $50 is normal: a card with an afternoon tea voucher or a practical garden kneeler is plenty. Keep office gifts general rather than personal.

What do you get a retiree who has everything?

Give time and places rather than objects. A national park pass, a National Trust membership or an afternoon tea voucher gives them reasons to go out. A book subscription keeps arriving all year. If they have a lot of stories, Storyworth turns those into a book. None of these adds clutter to a house that is already full.

Is a watch still a good retirement gift?

It can be, if they like wearing one. The tradition comes from companies giving a watch for long service. A hand-wound watch like the Farer Marsden suits someone who enjoys a small daily ritual, since it needs winding every day or two. For someone who wears a smartwatch or nothing at all, spend the money on travel or a hobby instead.
