Gifts $200 and up in Australia

Spend it on something used every day

The best big gifts replace a thing the person already uses daily and quietly tolerates: cheap earbuds on the commute, a phone strapped to an arm for runs, a worn-out frying pan. That is why the Bose headphones, the Garmin Forerunner and the Solidteknics pan are here.

The second good use of this budget is something they want but would never buy for themselves. The Theragun Mini and the Waverley Mills throw fit here.

Avoid spending big on a hobby they have only mentioned once. A pottery course or an espresso grinder is a great gift for someone already curious and money wasted on someone who is not.

Check the hidden costs and the location

Several picks need something else to work. The Ooni needs a gas bottle and a peel. The Kobo Libra stylus is sold separately. The Solidteknics pan is a pre-order and needs drying and oiling. The Varia works best with a Garmin bike computer or watch.

The experiences are tied to one place. The balloon flight is in the Hunter Valley with a pre-dawn start and depends on the weather. The Clay course is in Sydney and needs four free weeks in a row. The native foods class is at one venue. Check where they live before you buy.

If you cannot pin down a hobby, the Waverley Mills throw is the safer big gift for a cold winter.

Watches and sharing

The Melbourne Watch Company Fitzroy is 44 mm, which is big. Look at the watch they wear now before you buy. Automatics stop if left in a drawer, so it suits someone who would wear it daily.

This is also the price where splitting a gift makes sense. The Monos carry-on, the Marshall speaker and the balloon flight all work well from siblings to parents.

Order early. The Solidteknics pan is a pre-order, and Australia Post slows down in December.

Questions people ask

What is a good gift over $200 for someone who has everything?

Upgrade something they already use daily rather than adding a new thing. Noise-cancelling headphones for a frequent flyer, a better running watch for a runner, or a wool blanket for a cottage they already love. Experiences also work well, such as a balloon flight or a pottery course, as long as the person lives near the venue and has time to go.

Is it better to give one $200 gift or several smaller ones?

One good item usually lands better than several fillers, as long as it fits a real habit. A single Kobo Libra Colour for a heavy reader beats a pile of bookmarks and mugs. Several smaller gifts make more sense when you do not know the person's tastes well enough to commit to one big choice.

What expensive gift is safe if I do not know their size?

Avoid clothing and boots. Pick something without a fit, such as headphones, a speaker, an e-reader, a massage gun or a blanket. The Theragun Mini, Marshall Middleton II and Topsy Farms blanket all work for almost anyone in the right household, and none of them depends on a size chart.

Should I split an expensive gift with other people?

Yes, when the item is clearly better than anything one person would buy. A carry-on suitcase for parents, a pizza oven for a family that cooks outside, or a big speaker for the cottage are all good group gifts. Agree on the item and the budget before anyone orders, and have one person handle the purchase and delivery.
