Graduation gift ideas in Canada

Start with where they are going next

A graduation gift works best when it fits the next twelve months, not the ceremony. Find out what changes in September. A high school grad moving into residence needs different things from a university grad starting a desk job or taking a year to travel.

For a grad heading to university, think small room, shared spaces and a lot of walking. The Osprey Daylite Plus, the Anker magnetic battery and the My Dorm Store care package all get used daily. For a grad moving into a first apartment, a Leatherman Wingman saves a lot of borrowing. For a grad starting work, the Logitech MX Master 3S or a Leuchtturm notebook beats anything decorative. For a gap year, the Arc'teryx Mantis 2 and the Peak Design phone tripod pack small.

If you truly do not know, the Apple Gift Card is fine for an iPhone user.

How much to spend

For a classmate, a cousin or a friend's kid, under $50 is normal. The iFixit kit, the Leuchtturm notebook and the care package land around there.

For a niece, nephew or godchild, $50 to $150 covers the Kobo, the Instax camera, the Audio-Technica headphones and the Osprey pack.

Parents and grandparents buy the milestone item: the Bose headphones or the Garmin watch. If the price feels steep, split it with relatives and give one good thing.

Mistakes to skip

Decor for a residence room they have not seen. Rooms are small and often have rules about walls.

Ignoring compatibility and running costs. The Peak Design tripod needs a MagSafe iPhone or a magnetic case. The turntable needs speakers. Instax film is sold separately and costs about a dollar a shot, so add a pack or two to the box.

Showing up late. Graduations bunch up in June. Order physical gifts two weeks ahead, and if you are late, the Apple Gift Card arrives by email the same day.

Questions people ask

How much should you give for a graduation gift?

For a friend's child or a classmate, $25 to $50 is normal. For a niece, nephew or godchild, $50 to $150 is common. Parents and grandparents often give one larger milestone item, like a watch or good headphones. Cash is still common and welcome, especially for grads moving out. Spend what you are comfortable with and add a handwritten card; grads remember the note longer than the amount.

What is a good graduation gift for a high school student going to university?

Something they will use every day in a small room on a busy campus. A daypack, a portable charger, decent headphones or an e-reader with library borrowing all fit. In Canada, a care package with a bottle and a beanie is easy to ship. Skip wall decor and bulky items; residence rooms are small and often have rules about what goes on the walls.

Is a gift card an acceptable graduation gift?

Yes, as long as it matches how they already spend. An Apple Gift Card suits an iPhone user, a bookshop card suits a reader, and a travel card suits someone planning a trip. Check the terms: some cards only work in one country or expire. Write a specific note in the card so it feels chosen rather than grabbed at the checkout.

What do you get a college graduate starting their first job?

Think about the desk and the commute. A good mouse like the Logitech MX Master 3S, noise-cancelling headphones for an open-plan office, a solid notebook, or a slim charger for the bag all get daily use. Avoid work clothing unless you know their size and the dress code. A quality item they use every day beats a framed diploma holder.
