Gifts for a 1 year old in Canada

Toys that fit a first birthday

A one-year-old is pulling up, stacking, chewing and throwing. Good toys follow those habits. Halilit's first band gives them things to shake and bang, which they want to do anyway. Ask the parents first, because it is loud.

Tegu's magnetic blocks click together, so towers do not collapse on a frustrated toddler, and the train rolls. They are sold in US dollars on Tegu's site, so a Canadian order may carry exchange fees or duties. The pocket pouch is a cheaper way in and works well at a restaurant.

The Toniebox is the one big gift we would buy at this age. A one-year-old can place a figure and a song plays, with no screen. Figures cost extra, so it suits a family where grandparents will keep adding them. The sleepy crocodile night light only makes sense alongside one.

Winter is the Canadian difference

A first birthday between November and March means stroller walks in the cold. Stonz puffer booties stay on and keep feet warm in the stroller or carrier. They are not made for walking on ice, so a child taking first steps outdoors needs real boots later.

Inside, a sleep bag is the safe answer for a toddler who kicks off covers. Kyte Baby's 1.0 TOG bag is light, so it suits a warm house or layering with pyjamas. Like the Tegu blocks, it is priced in US dollars.

Mealtimes and comfort

By twelve months most children eat with their hands and wear half of it. A Kushies silicone bib wipes clean or goes in the dishwasher and costs little enough to add to a bigger gift.

For comfort, Lulujo's lovey is a small blanket with an animal head that a toddler can carry around. Some reviewers mention loose stitching, so check the seams. Sophie la girafe is still useful for a child cutting molars.

Skip the newborn things in Canadian shops' baby sections. Swaddles, scratch mittens and newborn gift sets were useful a year ago and are outgrown now. A hockey-print blanket from Petit Lem is the exception if the family lives at the rink; it works as a nursery or spring stroller blanket.

Questions people ask

What do you buy a 1 year old who has everything?

Buy for the parents' daily routine or for the next stage. A sleep bag in the next size, a suction plate, a silicone bib or winter booties all get used. Or pick a toy that grows with the child, like magnetic blocks or a Toniebox, rather than another rattle or soft toy that suits a younger baby.

Is a Toniebox too early for a 1 year old?

tonies lists the Toniebox from age one, and a one-year-old can place and remove a figure without help. The early figures are songs and short stories. The real cost is the figures, sold separately, so it suits a family that will add to it over a few years rather than one wanting a single complete gift.

Are personalised gifts good for a first birthday?

Yes, if the gift is also a toy the child will use. A pull-along train or wooden puzzle with their name is played with now and kept later. Order early, because personalised wooden toys are made to order, and check how long names will fit before paying.

What should I avoid buying a 1 year old?

Newborn items, toys with small parts, and anything marked for older children. Swaddles, scratch mittens and newborn clothing sets are outgrown by now. Very loud toys can annoy parents, so ask first. And skip large plastic toys unless you know the family has room for them.
