Between about 9 and 12, kids start to care what their friends think of a gift. Anything that looks like it came from the toddler aisle gets put away. They do not want adult things either. They want the real version: a real chemistry set, a speaker for their own room, a camera that takes actual photos.
Look at what they do after school. A builder will spend a weekend on the UGears Golden Snitch. A tween who hosts friends gets more from Exploding Kittens than almost anything else here. One who draws will use the OOLY watercolour markers every day.
Builders and coders: the Golden Snitch for a Harry Potter fan, the mBot2 for a kid who already codes and wants the next step. The Chemistry C500 and the hydroponics lab suit a tween who likes real experiments and has a patient adult nearby.
Music and their own room: the Marley speaker is a sensible first speaker, and the Victrola suitcase player is a cheap way into vinyl for an older tween. The light-up pen suits a kid who journals in bed.
Active kids: the Spikeball foot bags, the Waboba Moon Ball and the Owala bottle for practice. All three survive a school bag.
Under $15: the Rubik's Cube, the Moon Ball and the light-up pen. Good for stockings and class gift swaps.
Around $20 to $50: Exploding Kittens, the Owala bottle, the Marley speaker, the Chemistry C500, the Golden Snitch and the record player. Most good tween gifts sit here.
Above that: the mBot2 and the Paper Shoot camera. Check with a parent first. The mBot2 is a bigger commitment of time as well as money.
Buying for the age they were last year. A gift that suited them at nine can feel babyish at eleven, so ask a parent or older sibling what they are into now.
Forgetting the extras. The chemistry set needs household supplies, the watercolour markers want thick paper, and the Golden Snitch needs paint if they want it gold. Cheap to fix, but a gift that cannot be used on the day is a letdown.
