Gifts for grandma

Start with the family, not the shop

Ask a grandma what she wants and most will say nothing, then mean the grandchildren. So the strongest gifts here carry the family to her: a Wi-Fi photo frame everyone can send to, a printed photo book or calendar, a pen pal kit for a grandchild in another city, a memoir service that turns her answers into a book.

A connected frame is our first choice because it keeps working after the wrapping paper is gone. Every new photo of a grandchild shows up on her side table without her pressing anything. The catch is setup. Someone has to connect it to her Wi-Fi and get the rest of the family sending, and that someone is probably you. Do it on the day, before you leave.

If she has no Wi-Fi, or you know she will unplug anything with a screen, go to paper. A photo book takes an evening or two to lay out. A calendar takes less, and it puts every birthday on her kitchen wall, which saves her a lot of phone calls.

Buy for the hands and eyes she has now

Plenty of grandmas still love puzzles, cards and email, and quietly give them up when the pieces get fiddly or the print gets small. You can fix that without making a fuss. Large-piece jigsaws keep the habit going. Playing cards with jumbo corner numbers look like any other deck at the table. A large-print backlit keyboard helps the grandma who still emails but hunts for keys.

The same goes for radios. A lot of radios now have menus and screens. A grandma who listens every morning wants a dial she can turn or a preset she can find without her glasses. Pick the simplest one that gets her stations.

Do not label any of this as a gift for old people. Nobody wants that. Just buy the version that works.

Warm is never wrong

Older bodies feel the cold, and house slippers and throws get used every single day. Get slippers with a grippy sole, since smooth floors and soft soles are a bad mix. Felted wool house shoes with a closed heel stay on better than an open slipper. If she has a favourite chair, a throw that lives on it will be used more than almost anything else you could buy.

Check the washing instructions before you buy a blanket. Pure wool and possum blends are warm and lovely, but they need hand washing. If she would rather throw it in the machine, buy the washable one and do not apologise for it.

Gifts of time

An afternoon tea voucher, a zoo membership she can use with the grandkids, a park pass for road trips: these work best when you go along. A voucher handed over and never booked expires in a drawer. If you buy one, put a date in the card and turn up.

Questions people ask

What do you get a grandma who says she wants nothing?

Something that brings the family to her. A photo frame the grandchildren fill from their phones, a printed photo book of the year, or a pen pal kit for a grandchild who lives far away. These add no clutter and they are about the people she actually cares about. A visit with an afternoon tea booked also counts.

Are digital photo frames hard for grandparents to use?

The ones we list are designed so the grandparent does nothing. Family members send pictures from an app or by email, and the frame shows them. The hard part is setup: it needs her Wi-Fi password and someone to install it. Do that in person, and get two or three relatives sending before you leave.

What is a good cheap gift for grandma?

Jumbo-index playing cards, a window bird feeder, a large-piece puzzle or a classic teapot all cost little and get used. Pair one with a handwritten card or a printed photo of the grandchildren. A small useful thing plus a personal note beats a large generic one every time.

What should I avoid buying for an older grandma?

Gadgets that need an app she will never open, slippers with smooth soft soles that slide on hard floors, and anything that announces she is getting old. Also skip experience vouchers unless you will book and take her yourself, because unused vouchers simply expire.
