Gifts for coworkers in the US

Keep it small, useful and neutral

Coworker gifts have one job: show you noticed the person without making anyone uncomfortable. That means modest prices, nothing personal like clothing or perfume, and nothing that needs explaining. Desk items, coffee, tea, chocolate and small games all pass.

Pick from their working day. A coworker who always has a notebook open will use Blackwing memo books or a Rifle Paper set. One who keeps borrowing a charger will use a Native Union cable or the UGREEN plug. One who complains about the open office will use Loop earplugs. If you know nothing about them, a bag of coffee or a box of Dandelion cherries is hard to get wrong.

Secret Santa budgets

Most office exchanges set a limit between $10 and $25, and most of this list fits. Stick to the limit. Going far over makes the other gifts look small; going far under can look like you did not try.

At the low end there is chili crisp, a tea tin and a pocket planner. Around the usual limit there are notebooks, a cable, earplugs and an AirTag. If your office has no limit, treat it as $25 and spend the effort on choosing well.

Thank-you and leaving gifts

A thank-you for a coworker who covered for you can be a little more personal. A coffee bag they will finish or the T2 tea advent calendar says thanks without being too much.

For a leaving gift, pool money with the team. The Ugmonk walnut desk kit suits someone moving to a new role, and everyone can sign the card. Choose something easy to carry home on their last day.

Mistakes to avoid

Food is safe only if you check. Read the allergen line on the shop's page before you buy chocolate or snacks for someone you do not know well.

Check the phone. An AirTag only works with an iPhone or iPad, so skip it for an Android user.

Order early. Dated items like 2027 planners and calendars sell out, and small shops slow down in December. If the exchange is tomorrow, buy coffee or chocolate locally rather than rushing an online order.

Avoid joke gifts that need context, anything about weight or age, and alcohol unless your workplace is relaxed about it. Wrap it and label it clearly, because twenty Secret Santa gifts look the same in a pile.

Questions people ask

Is a charity gift appropriate for a coworker?

Yes, for someone who has said they want nothing or has a full desk, and when you know they like giving back. Many US charities offer a gift in someone's name with a card you can send. In a Secret Santa, add something small to unwrap, like a bag of coffee or a tea tin, so they are not left empty-handed.
