Christmas gift ideas in the UK

Start with what they do every evening

Write the list, then one line next to each name: what they do most evenings. A reader gets the Kobo or, for something that keeps arriving, a Daunt Books subscription chosen by their staff. Someone with a growing record pile gets the AT-LP60X. A family that fills the house on the 25th gets Herd Mentality, which needs a crowd and falls flat with four.

For the person who fixes everyone else's gadgets over the holidays, the iFixit Moray kit is the cheapest useful thing here. For a desk worker, a Logitech mouse or a UGREEN charger replaces something they use every day.

Warm things that get used

A British winter is damp more than bitter, and the warm gifts that last are wool. Melin Tregwynt throws are woven in Wales and suit a sofa all winter. Corgi's Fair Isle socks are made in Wales too; wash them cool and keep them out of the dryer. glerups felted slippers suit a parent or grandparent with cold feet and smooth floors.

Budgets

Under £30: the iFixit kit, an AirTag, Corgi socks, Herd Mentality, a Leuchtturm notebook or the T2 calendar. Good for teachers, neighbours and Secret Santa.

From £30 to £150: glerups slippers, an Arc'teryx beanie, a UGREEN charger, a Logitech mouse, the RETO film camera or the Peak Design clip.

Over £150, buy one thing: the Kobo, the Marshall speaker, the Theragun Mini, a Melin Tregwynt throw, a Daunt subscription or the Bose headphones.

Post and last-minute gifts

Royal Mail and couriers are slow in the last fortnight. Order by early December, and earlier still from small makers. Give the T2 advent calendar in the last week of November, or it turns into a pile of tea bags.

Charge the Theragun, the speaker and the headphones before you wrap them. If you have left it late, an Apple Gift Card arrives by email for an iPhone user, and a Daunt subscription can be bought online and announced with a card.

Questions people ask

What is a good Christmas gift for someone who has everything?

Give something that gets used up or done. Good hot chocolate, a coffee set, a book subscription or a cooking class all avoid adding clutter. A board game for the holidays also works, since it gives the family something to do together. If they still want an object, upgrade something they use every day, like their socks or their reading device.

How much should you spend on Christmas gifts?

It depends on the relationship and your budget, not a fixed rule. Many people spend under $30 for coworkers, teachers and neighbours, $30 to $150 for friends and siblings, and save larger amounts for a partner or parent. Agree limits with family early so nobody feels caught out on the day.

What are good last-minute Christmas gifts?

Emailed gift cards and subscriptions. An Apple Gift Card works for an iPhone user, a Cozymeal card for a US cooking fan, and a book subscription for a reader. For something physical, local shops often stock chocolate, socks and board games. Print the email and put it in a card so there is still something to open.

What is a good Christmas gift for the whole family?

A game everyone can play. Herd Mentality works for big mixed-age groups, Mario Kart World suits a family with a Switch 2, and Wingspan is good for a slower afternoon. Food also works for a household: a spiced hot chocolate or a coffee gift set gets shared. Choose based on how many people will be in the room.
